The Bremen Cotton Exchange Opens its Doors

From 1 June, the Bremen Cotton Exchange will open its doors for guided tours. The Bremen Tourist Centre has included the historic office building in its official programme of guided city tours.

It is 1902 – Robert Bosch invents the spark plug, Louis Renault the drum brake and the German actor Heinz Rühmann is born. The 5-mast "Preußen" becomes the largest sailing ship ever built and is put into service by the Laiesz shipping company. In the Hanseatic City of Bremen, a completely different kind of event is recorded: The impressive Bremen Cotton Exchange building is ready, right on the market place. The Bremen cotton world finally gets a permanent home. 12,000 m², built solely for the cotton trade. Inside, a logistical masterpiece, outside a late document of the architectural craftsmanship of the star architect of the time, Poppe, all add up to a landmark of Bremen’s power in the cotton trade.

Fritz A. Grobien, President of the Bremen Cotton Exchange: "Cotton is of essential importance in Bremen's trading history. Many Bremen companies only exist because cotton came to the Hanseatic city. Today, the Bremen Cotton Exchange is a key point of contact for the cotton industry throughout the world. But we have our roots in Bremen. The building at the market place is our home and we are very proud of it. "

From 1 June, the Bremen Cotton Exchange can now be visited by the public. Every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month from 10:30 - 11:30, public tours will be held in the Bremen Cotton Exchange. More information is available from the Bremen Tourist Centre. Tel: +49 (0)421-30800 10 or online at www.bremen-tourismus.de.

Cotton - Successful Seminar Week in Bremen

Cotton - Successful Seminar Week in BremenAt the end of November, the Bremen Cotton Exchange organised a seminar on the subject of cotton. During the week-long seminar, participants were provided with basic knowledge of cotton and the cotton trade.

"To deal with this comprehensive subject in only a few days is naturally a challenge", said Seminar Leader Karsten Fröse, "however with presentations by specialists and lively discussion, we are able to build up a wonderful basis. Above all, the hand classing of cotton is of great importance. Many participants are picking up cotton for the very first time".

Alongside traditional classing, there was an introduction into laboratory testing methods. In addition, cotton-specific trading regulations were explained. The participants learnt about the basics of international commodity trading and marine insurance. An additional part of the programme presented the characteristics and differences of fibres.

Fritz Grobien, President of the Bremen Cotton Exchange added that "cotton is one of the most important raw materials in the textile industry. We are observing that in the textile chain, even among retailers themselves, there is a great need to catch up on the subject of cotton. Bremen is the centre of global cotton testing. Here you can find hand-picked fibre experts and trading specialists. The textile chain can benefit from this".
